National Geographic Day Tour: Cooking with the Mujos
National Geographic Day Tour: Cooking with the Mujos
Just half an hour or so from the bustle of Dubrovnik, you’ll arrive at the tranquil village of Lovorno, at the foot of Snijeznica Mountain. Here, the Mujo family, who have called Lovorno home for over 500 years, invites you into their world, offering more than just a glimpse into local traditions – more an invitation to become part of their family. This isn’t just a cooking class, it’s a cultural immersion into the everyday life and history of a family that has withstood centuries.
On arrival, take in the scenic surroundings before being welcomed into the family home, where three generations of Mujos – 18 strong – will treat you to a welcome drink and share stories that paint a vivid picture of their life over the decades. Take a look with them around the garden, an idyllic spot where you’ll help pick ingredients like tomatoes and onions, essential for the day’s meal. In their cozy kitchen, you’ll get hands-on, helping to knead dough for bread and prepare other traditional dishes, all while learning about the local cuisine and natural preservation methods.
As your meal cooks, sit back and enjoy a glass of local wine, described by the Mujos as ‘sunlight trapped in water.’ Over lunch, the family will delve deeper into their ancestral tales, including their role in the Konavle rebellion, illustrated by historical documents that underscore their significant place in the region’s history. This visit offers a profound connection to the authentic life and legacy of the Mujo family, leaving you feeling like a true member of their community.
