Get ready to be wowed. Murano and Burano are two of the main islands in the Venice lagoon, and while their names are similar, they’re both unique and historic in their own ways. Enjoy a relaxed day visiting both islands.

Your trip will start at the pier, departing on a motor launch. You’ll travel along the Giudecca Canal to Murano, famous for its glass. In 1291, all Venetian glass manufacturing was moved to this island when the city leaders became concerned about the furnaces causing a fire that could burn down the entire city. For a long time, the secrets of Murano glass stayed on the island, and they still use the same throusand- year-old methods today. You can watch some of the modern masters at work during a visit to a leading factory.

Your second stop will be the famously colorful island of Burano. This former small fishing village has streets of houses painted in bright hues. Apparently, fog used to get so bad around the island, the fishermen painted their houses in easy- to-spot colors to find their way home more easily. Burano is also home to a centuries-old lace industry. Take some time to walk around and find shops where the lace is still being hand-stitched in the same tradition. You’ll have free time to explore both islands on this trip, and both are easily walkable with lots of great places to grab lunch or a quick bite. And don’t forget to pick some hand-crafted souvenirs before boarding your boat back to the port.
